When you think of the intersection between social justice and race, automobiles might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, the automotive industry is not immune to issues of racial inequality and injustice.

Historically, the automotive industry has played a role in perpetuating racism and discrimination. From the early days when Black Americans were excluded from owning cars due to discriminatory lending practices and Jim Crow laws, to more recent instances of racial profiling during traffic stops, the relationship between race and cars is complex. One of the key issues in the automotive industry is the lack of diversity and representation. From executives in the boardroom to designers in the studio, people of color are underrepresented in key decision-making roles. This lack of diversity can lead to products and marketing campaigns that are tone-deaf or even perpetuate harmful stereotypes. In addition to representation, there are also disparities in access to transportation based on race. Communities of color are more likely to be located in areas with limited access to public transportation, making car ownership a necessity. However, systemic inequalities such as racial bias in lending practices can make it difficult for people of color to obtain auto loans on fair terms. Furthermore, racial profiling in traffic stops is a persistent issue that disproportionately affects people of color. Black drivers are more likely to be pulled over, searched, and arrested during traffic stops compared to their white counterparts. This systemic discrimination not only perpetuates fear and mistrust of law enforcement but also has real-life consequences for individuals and communities. In order to address these issues, the automotive industry must actively work towards greater diversity and inclusion at all levels. This includes implementing policies to combat racial bias in lending practices, promoting fair and equitable treatment of all customers, and holding law enforcement accountable for instances of racial profiling. As consumers, we can also play a role in promoting social justice in the automotive industry by supporting companies that prioritize diversity and inclusivity, advocating for policies that address systemic inequalities, and speaking out against instances of racism and discrimination in the industry. By recognizing and addressing the ways in which race intersects with the automotive industry, we can work towards a more just and equitable future for all.
